The First Annual Mermaids-by-the-Sea event brings together some very talented and motivated people from the Town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, The SCUBA diving community, and the World of Mermaids. We want to have lots of fun, make some news, and support some very worthy causes.
Diveheart Foundation- was founded in Chicago in 2001 to provide and support educational SCUBA diving, surface supplies gas (SSG), snorkeling and related experience programs which are open to any child, adult, or veteran with a disability with the hope of providing both physical and psychological therapeutic value to that person, while building confidence, independence and self esteem … enriching their quality of life and human spirit.
It is the “CAN DO” spirit that Diveheart strives to instill in all its participants by giving them the confidence and independence that allows them to face their own life challenges and overcome barriers that before might have seemed insurmountable.
Through SCUBA diving, Diveheart supports and facilitates programs that teach children and adults with disabilities to fly. Thanks to the wonder of the water column, the oceans and lakes of the world become the forgiving weightless environment of outer space, giving perfect buoyancy to a child or adult who would otherwise struggle on land.
BioRock USA- The ingenious Biorock process mimics the natural growth of coral reefs and was invented by a pioneering architect, the late Professor Wolf Hilbertz in the 1970’s, as a way of growing natural building materials in the sea. In the 1980’s Hilbertz began working with Dr. Thomas Goreau, a coral reef specialist, to use the process to restore coral reefs. They and their students have built hundreds of Biorock coral reef and oyster reef restoration projects in more than 20 countries. They found that corals on these structures grow typically two to six times faster than normal and have sixteen to fifty times higher survival following severe high temperature episodes
The first coral reef fisheries habitat and restoration project in America – using Biorock technolology has been installed exclusively in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea! This pilot project makes the town the leader in coral reef restoration in Florida.
The Biorock project is located south of the fishing pier and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea snorkel trail and will be the backdrop for Allen The Grouper Sherrod’s World Record Dive.
