Mermaids-By-The-Sea, a gathering of mermaids from September 17-21, 2014 at the seashore in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea brings mermaids together in beautiful, comfortable, and secure surroundings to gather and share the experience of being a mermaid. Mermaids from far and wide are invited to this annual event to meet, greet, and make new “mer-friends” in a gorgeous oceanfront tropical setting.
This year will be a very special gathering, where you can be part of a history-making event! Allen “The Grouper” Sherrod returns to our reef to reclaim his world record for the longest open saltwater SCUBA dive he originally set here in 2011. The Grouper will attempt an amazing 55 hours continuously underwater on the reef to set the new world record. Come cheer him on and be seen across the globe!
Video of The Grouper’s underwater record attempt will be broadcast from his location on our reef 24/7 over the internet so millions of people around the world can watch and be a part of this amazing record-breaking event. We want you here with your fellow mermaids to cheer him on and have the world see you swim on our beautiful reef.
To add to the magic The Grouper has decided to “tie the knot” with his love, Mermaid Queen Barbara Wynns during his record dive. There will be an underwater “in tails” wedding ceremony between the handsome diver and his Mermaid at 11:11 AM on Friday the 19th with a large mermaid wedding party in attendance. You are invited be a part of this ceremony as we will attempt to record the most people in attendance at an underwater wedding ceremony and establish a new world record for the most mermaids in tails in saltwater at the same time.
When Eric Ducharme was just 16 years old he performed as the prince in Weeki Wachee Springs Little Mermaid show. Now 22, he’s made realistic, hand-painted custom mermaid tails for a range of clients as diverse as Lady Gaga, RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants, Target, and Saturday Night Live.

Her work on the book “Mermaid” opened the door to the world of mermaids and Carolyn attended Mermaid Camp at Weeki Wachee Springs to become a mermaid. Carolyn’s popular blog I Am A Mermaid http://iamamermaid.com/ is an online diary of mermaid activities and events.
International award-winning photographer Andreas Franke will attend this year’s event to present his exhibit of magical undersea art from The Sinking World of Andreas Franke to Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea has all of the best elements to make a mermaid feel right at home. It is a small town in the old Florida style with low-rise buildings set along quaint and charming streets. Its lovely beachfront hotels, such as the world-class Windjammer Resort, allow guests to walk straight from their rooms onto the pool deck or beach -ideal for mermaid entrance and egress.
The beautiful beaches of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea are some of the best in Florida; while the town has plenty of areas to sit oceanside in “full tails” permitting mermaids to feel at home in a relaxed and comfortable seaside setting near their natural habitat.
The absolute best reason for a mermaid gathering here in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is the vibrant living coral reef just 100 yards from our wide sandy beach. Here any mermaid can easily swim to the reef to absorb the ocean’s energy and mingle with its inhabitants.
